Gold,
silver, copper and iron ore all played a significant part
of Atikokan's rich and varied history. With the discovery
of a major iron ore deposit (Steep Rock) in the 30's Atikokan
changed completely.
The
present Atikokan is a community that strives to meet the
needs of it's residents and offers a wide variety of services,
opportunities and activities.
It's
main employer is the forest product industry, a Thermal
generating plant of Ontario Hydro, and tourism plays an
important part of the local economy.
Fishing,
hunting, canoeing, kayaking the vast number of lakes and
rivers in the area makes for a pleasant, safe community
for those living in this area.
